My good buddy Hat pointed out to me, one evening, a brand new post on the MSD scale Dream Valley thread over at Den of Angels. This one to be exact, with Crissaegrim requesting help sizing a fabric santa hat to fit DV's 1/4 scale Griffin the dragon. Being possession of both one of my own and stash of fabric and faux fur, I knew what I had to do. First step: the mockup:
Quoth Hat: "He looks like he resents this hennin."
After confirming that my rough could fit a main horn and the cheek horns as requested, I moved onto making a final pattern. This pattern is linked below; as a santa hat, it's pretty flexible and will likely fit a number of dolls with varying degrees of success. Size up or down to match your specific needs.
The overall making of the hat is pretty simple. I personally used red minky and white seal faux fur; you can adapt this as needed to the materials you have on hand. Use a pom pom , change up colors and trim and do an elf hat, make a goth santa hat. Go nuts, it's a basic pattern and meant to be spiffed up. I traced onto the minky and then sewed it up on the sewing machine to make things go faster. It was a little wonky on exact sizing of both pieces, but as long as there's no gaps in the stitching, you're good.
Embrace your inner Bob Ross and remember that no one sees the inside of these things. Also, get some hemostats to turn it.
Next, add on the trim and fun bits you've chosen. I included the measurements for the trim I cut from faux fur. (if using faux fur, make sure you cut it on the backing with a knife, rather than scissors from the front, or the pile will be wonky.) I then folded it lengthwise and stitched it, good sides out, because faux fur can be a real pain to turn. Similarly, the two circles I cut for the pom were sewn with the good sides out and the stitching hidden by the fur pile. Stitch them on to your hat, and you've got a completed piece.
Fashion, or something resembling it.
It's a very fast, basic project to get your dolls outfitted for the holidays with a minimum of fuss and fabric. Stick that sucker on a doll and pose them in front of seasonally appropriate decor.
Merry Christmas!
